I’m so sorry you feel that way. I’m definitely not a trained counselor, but I do know that depression isn’t something to be taken lightly. there are ways to find help.

I know what you mean. everyone has moments of feeling a little down. but the important thing to remember is that sometimes you’re in the process of making a loop. you might feel like you’re a little down, but when you circle back up again, you’ll find that you’re at an even higher place than when you started.
and here’s an idea: whenever I feel uninspired, I’ll start a project (like maybe a sweet little video or a photo book or even just a simple letter) and dedicate it to someone I love. that, and playing a great song while dancing & twirling & singing at the top of my lungs. that always feels good. :)

You’re in Paris?! Lucky you! I really want to go there. My French class is this coming Spring, but due to the recession and lack of money, I can’t afford it now. I think i will be there next summer though. Tell me how it is please? (:
oui, oui, it was lots of fun. paris is a gorgeous city. so picturesque. walking through those streets, I literally felt like I was in a movie. I’m going to see if I can post some pictures for you. I hope you get there soon!! you’ll have so much fun when you go, especially in the summer, because in June/July/August, it doesn’t get dark until 10 at night. ahhhhh, l’été a Paris.
I really like your “notes to self” theme because I am totally like that too. There are so many wonderful and beautiful things we experience through out the day I hate the idea of not remembering them and treasuring them for days to come.
that’s exactly why I started it! I’d have all these fleeting thoughts, and I realized, “hey, if I don’t write them down, they’ll just vanish.” I wanted to create a little space where I could be reminded of these things whenever I needed to hear them most. like a little love letter written in fragments, or little bits of sunshine saved up for a rainy day.

that’s a really good question! I’ve never really thought about exactly what helps a person stay optimistic. when I was really little, a family friend once told me that I was an optimist (our family was moving, and we were all sitting together, talking about it. I must have said something like, “well, we’ll just have to make the best of it.” I’m sure I didn’t come up with that on my own. I must have heard it somewhere (probably from my mom, the eternal optimist. thanks, Mommy!), but I do remember our friend told me that that’s what an optimist would say.) and it just stuck. so I grew up thinking that one of my major characteristics was to always look on the bright side, to try to make the best of any situation, and I’m so grateful for that.
that isn’t to say that I think staying optimistic is necessarily easy. I think sometimes it takes effort to focus on the positive. it takes courage to really believe in something, to trust that it will all work out. but I do think that it is a choice. while it might be easier for some people, every person has the ability to be optimistic. I feel so incredibly blessed, and I know that a huge part of staying positive is surrounding yourself with people who are positive and avoiding the ones who aren’t (and the situations that aren’t). so just remember to always appreciate those people who love you unconditionally, who encourage you, who believe in you, who see your future in the brightest light. they are rare treasures. keep them close to you always, and if nothing else, look on the bright side for them. because that’s what you’d want for the people you love. you’d want them to be full of hope & wonder & excitement. so why not lead by example?

hi there! I’m sorry to hear that you’re confused. this is one of the most frustrating situations ever, and you’re definitely not alone. I think most people go through something like this, at one point in their lives. ughhhh, so what to do? I don’t know. it’s really hard to be friends with someone for whom you have feelings that might or might not be reciprocated. it can be really painful. but there could be a host of reasons why doesn’t want to start dating again, and cutting off the friendship as punishment for being honest with you about his feelings doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense to me. I obviously don’t know the full situation, but I think if you really want to make him a part of your life, then you should, or you should at least listen to that feeling & consider it. but remember to stay open to other guys and not let him become your whole world. actually, it’s probably never good to make any one person you’re whole world.
just remember this: you will fall in love with a guy who will love you for who you are, 360 degrees. who will be just as crazy about you as you are about him.
so don’t let this guy friend of yours get in the way of making that happen. if someone doesn’t realize how great you are, then he doesn’t deserve to be with you. because you are a treasure. don’t forget it!

I do! I actually think really hard to completely fall out of love with a person. I think situations change, and people change, but the love you feel for a person never truly goes away. it might turn into something else (like friendship), or you might feel it less intensely. but real, true, deep love doesn’t just disappear. it’s always there. because love, by its very definition, is something that endures.
I’d say the best thing you can do is be open about how you feel & what you want, and always always always stay true to yourself. and realize that if someone doesn’t love you back, that means he/she isn’t worthy of your love. (and vice versa) because love happens when TWO people fall, not just one. you deserve to be with someone who is just as crazy about you as you are about him/her. a love that makes you feel safe & secure & free. a love that brings out the best in you. a love with no limits.

of course you’re smart enough!! medicine is a really tough field & a really long road, but if you know it’s your passion, you’re halfway there!! some people spend their whole lives trying to figure out what their passion is. if you’re lucky enough to know now, don’t let anything stop you from going after it. sometimes school can get you down, but remember that if you’re focused on learning as much as you can, you will get to where you want to go. some things take a little more work, but it’ll be worth it in the end. I once read something by randy pausch that said:
“Brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to show how badly we want something.”
I always remember that whenever I get discouraged, because so many stories of success are sprinkled with set-backs along the way. and what distinguishes people who really achieve their goals is the ability to keep going. so hold onto that passion and let it guide you. let it motivate you & inspire you to keep going!! you are so much smarter, more capable, stronger, more determined that you realize, and I bet you’ll surprise yourself at how amazing you will be!!

I love your tumblr. It gives me motivation and it really speaks what i feel in my heart. Those unsaid words in my heart. Can you give me more motivation? At times,i really feel like giving up and i feel i am not able to work towards my dream ):

I’m so happy to help!! so let’s see…more motivation… I think it’s sometimes really easy to lose faith in yourself, just to lose confidence. one tiny set-back, and everything feels like it’s falling apart. but I think the best thing is to realize that, whenever you’re striving for something higher, you’re going to have up and downs. every great success story is full of disappointments. it’s never easy to reach for something more, to work towards a dream, but if you keep on reminding yourself that with each little step you take, you’re getting closer and closer, then it becomes easier to keep going. some days I feel like I’m taking leaps, and some days I feel like I’m taking baby steps (and even some days, it feels like I’m at a standstill), but I know that if I keep on moving, I will eventually get there.
there’s this one dream of mine, that I always say, “I don’t care if I’m 80 years old when I get there, but I will get there!!” and it kind of reminds me that nothing happens overnight, that just because success isn’t instant, it doesn’t mean that it’s not within reach. your dream is a lot closer to coming true than you probably realize it is. just keep at it!!!

there’s this song that I love by james morrison. it’s called undiscovered, and it’s all about feeling a little lost, but realizing that you’re actually not lost, you’re just undiscovered. it’s this idea that you still have so much to learn & discover about yourself and about the world. I truly think that every person has something that only they can give to the world, and sometimes it takes a while to figure out what that is, but as long as you keep on asking yourself those questions, you will get closer and closer to figuring that out. sometimes it can be really frustrating, but whenever I get discouraged, I try to remind myself that one day I will get there.
as for setting goals, I think one of the best ways to figure out what you want, is to stop and think about what you love doing, what you believe in. and if you follow what your heart is telling you, you can’t ever go wrong. I don’t know you at all, but I think you’re really brave for wanting a fresh start & for taking the time to think about what you really want out of your life. I know that you’ll find it! xoxo

thanks! yep, I believe in real friendship. I think there are some people in this world who truly understand & love & accept you for who you are, who will support you no matter what, who will bring out the best in you always. and those are the people for whom you will do the same. so yeah, I think those kinds of friendships are rare, but I believe they exist.
